SETTING AND HOW IT AFFECTS CHARACTERS By Jackie, Emily, Erin, and Ysabela

HOW DOES SETTING AFFECT A CHARACTER? Setting affects a character in the way he/she acts. Ex: if Riley was in a dark alley such as this one, he would probably act scared and/or be clutching his phone, with 911 on speed dial. Setting affects a character by the jobs and living conditions available to them. Ex: If Joe was raised and born on a farm, the setting would influence him to become a farmer. He could become something else if he wanted to, and if the supplies and things he needed were available to them.

HOW DOES SETTING AFFECT A CHARACTER? (CONTINUED) Setting affects a character by exposing them to dangerous weather and/or natural disasters. Ex: If Tara lives near the beach, a dangerous storm could flood her home, and she would have to pay for the damage. Setting affects a character by making them live through difficult time periods, events, or situations such as poverty or war. Ex: Ysabela would wear ragged clothing if she was in the middle of a war due to lack of necessities such as food, housing, and clothing.

HOW DID THE SETTING AFFECT OUR CHARACTER? The book, Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Septys takes place in 1941, when stalin and the soviets were taking over Lithuania and other countries. Setting influenced Lina(main character) to become a hard worker because otherwise, she would have been hurt, or even shot Lithuania and her family influenced her to become a smart, respectable girl, due to having a respectable family.

HOW DID THE SETTING AFFECT OUR CHARACTER? (CONTINUED) The setting influenced Lina and the way she dressed because she was denied clothing. This made her wear ragged clothing that was torn and dirty. She was also denied the chance of bathing, which meant that she didn’t look like she did when she was a rich girl in Lithuania. Her hair was dirty, and brown because of the mud stuck onto her head. The setting influenced her to become an artist, because she was used to seeing famous portraits all around and open books with pictures. If she grew up on the workers farm that she worked at, she probably wouldn’t have ever given being an artist a thought.
