The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) Ø The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) test is a - psychometric questionnaire to measure, - psychological preferences in people, i. e. , - to know how they perceive the world and make decisions. Ø Developed by the US psychologists Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers in 1975 (1940 -62 -75). Ø Participants are classified on 4 axes to determine; Ø One of the 16 possible personality types, such as; - ENFP, ENTJ, ENFJ and ESTP, ESFJ, ESTJ - INTJ, INFJ, INTP, INFP and ISFJ, ISTJ, ISFP, ISTP 3

The Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) suggests that there are four main dimensions of personality types: Ø Introvert / Extrovert (I/E) - Introverts are more inward-looking; extroverts are more oriented towards others. Ø Sensing / Intuitive (S/N) - Sensing types use their 5 senses to gather information; - Intuitive types explore possibilities while often applying 6 th sense. Ø Thinking / Feeling (T/F) - Thinking types use logic and careful thought in making decisions; - Feeling types trust their emotions and go with what they feel right. Ø Judging / Perceiving (J/P) - Judging types need closure; they want to be as sure as possible; - Perceiving types will take a chance on a variety of possibilities. 7
The Types and their uses Ø Each of the sixteen possible combinations has a name, for instance: Ø Visionaries (INTJ) - Original, Stubborn, and Driven. Ø Organizers (ESTJ) - Realistic, Logical, Analytical, and Businessmen like. Ø Conceptualizer (ENTP) - Entrepreneurial, Innovative, Individualistic, and Resourceful. Ø Research results on validity mixed. - MBTI® is a good tool for self-awareness and counseling. - Ideally NOT used as a selection test for job candidates. 8
