• Adversity can make people stronger. Those forced to face hardships often find within themselves strengths and survival instincts they never knew they had. Overcoming adversity can give people a sense of their own power and a greater understanding of human nature. Words in the following list relate to the positive ways in which people deal with adversity.
Console (v. ) • Comfort or soothe • We tried to console the sobbing boy, but he would not be comforted.
Conviction (n. ) • Belief • (criminal law) a final judgment of guilty in a criminal case and the punishment that is imposed; "the conviction came as no surprise"
Fortitude (n. ) • Strength to face adversity • Never once did her fortitude waver (falter) during that long illness.
Gall (n. ) • Rudeness, audacity, boldness • His questioner's gall shocked the lecturer.
Infallible (adj. ) • Never failing; incapable of being wrong • infallible evidence; infallible success; an infallible remedy. (= not liable to fail)
Mobilize (v. ) • Enlist; answer a call to action
Optimist (n. ) • An optimistic person; someone who has a hopeful or cheerful attitude toward life; someone who believes that good will prevail.
Persevere (v. ) • To continue despite difficulty; to persist and overcome • Though I never answered his calls, he persevered in calling me every night. • He is a persistent employee, who despite the disappointments, persevered in calling the attention to his project. • A learner perseveres in his studies in order to arrive at the necessary degree of improvement.
Resilient (adj. ) • recovering readily from illness, depression, adversity, or the like (able to survive and rebound from difficult circumstances)
Zealous (adj. ) • Passionate in pursuit of something. • He may be zealous in the salvation of souls.
