Do you have a favourite verse, passage or book from the Old Testament?
If you could ask Jesus one question, what would it be?
Where do you like to walk?
Last week: God Has Spoken This week: About His Son What does the Bible say? Going Deeper Living it Out
Luke 24: 13 -49
What does the Bible say? • What did the two disciples on the Emmaus Road think about Jesus? • (A prophet, powerful in word and deed… The promised Messiah, to redeem Israel… Because of His death, all hope is gone) • The risen Lord Jesus, basically does a Bible study with the disciples on the road and in the evening – why? • (Jesus showed them that ALL the Old Testament and ALL the Bible is about HIM, it all points to Jesus also models how to interpret) • According to v 25 -27 & 44 -47, what does Jesus say is the central theme of the OT? • (27, 44: Scripture is about Him (Jesus)… 26, 46: Suffering & glory… 47: Forgiveness and mission)
“The Old Testament is a story without an ending… Jesus Christ is the goal of the Old Testament and provides its true meaning. Any understanding of, or commentary on, the Old Testament that does not show up this fact is at best incomplete and at worst unchristian. ” - Graeme Goldsworthy
Going Deeper (Romans 1: 1 -6) • How does Paul summarise the message of the Scriptures here? Is there correlation to the summary of Jesus in Luke 24? • (2: The gospel was promised through the prophets and fulfilled in Jesus… 3: The message is ‘regarding His Son’… 6: ‘Gentiles’ literally means ‘among the nations’, Paul is prompting mission) • Paul describes the message as ‘the gospel’ – According to Luke 24: 47 & Romans 1: 16, what’s the implication of knowing this good news? • (Rom. 1: 16 – It is the power of God that brings salvation Luke 24: 24 – It prompts repentance and offers forgiveness of sin) • How might you summarise the link between the Bible, Jesus and the task of the church?
Going Deeper (Romans 1: 1 -6) • God revealed Himself in Jesus • Jesus incarnated (personified/embodied) the Scriptures and so reveals to true Word of God • What Jesus revealed was the message of the gospel, which we (the church) are tasked with sharing. • Thus, the Bible itself is our mission!! (Exciting!)
Living it Out How might we misread the Bible if we take Jesus and salvation out of the picture? Set of rules! “If I do this, I can earn my salvation” (Work’s Gospel) We would read the Bible is merely ‘stories’ and ‘tales’, not as God speaking and revealing Himself.
Living it Out Think back to your favourite Old Testament verses, passages, books. How are they fulfilled in Jesus? These points might help: - The character of God - The identity/need of humanity - The promises of God
Living it Out If all the Bible is about Jesus (and it is!) – how does that affect the way we should read/approach the Bible? • Regardless of what we read, we can be sure that we can grow in our relationship with Jesus • Even in hard or tough passages, Jesus can help us understand apply them • It means we can see God’s faithfulness through the whole of history and can therefore trust in God’s faithfulness for our lives today.
Pray: “the gospel… is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone” - Romans 1: 16 Pray with the person next to you: - That God might use us as we share the gospel - That we would see and grow with Jesus every time we read the Bible
