Romans 6: 12 -18 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace. 15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! 16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became

Words of Text Denoting Rule • Reign (basileuo) – to prevail or predominate w Literally, to possess regal authority; to be a king w Connotes use of force or power by action taken • Obey (hupakouo) - to listen to another and obey; to render submissive acceptance w Describes one submitting to the rule of another upon hearing & accepting the instruction • Dominion (kurieuo) - to be lord over w State of being under settled dominance & control w Settled state of power being exercised by right
Applying Words to Control • Sin “reigns” when actions of sin are allowed to prevail and predominate in our lives w May do such without great number of sins w Happens when any sin remains unrepented of • We “obey” sin when we submit our will to it w Process is described in James 1: 14 -15 w When our will submits to devil’s will, we sin • Sin has “dominion” when it has conquered our action & will w Sin’s lordship is exercised & is a hard taskmaster
Examples of Sin’s Dominion • • Pride & Self-Will Materialism & Greed Anger & Wrath Sins of the Tongue Falsehood & Deception Sexual Sins (adultery, pornography…) Drugs & Alcohol
How Do We Stop Sin From Having Dominion Over Us?

How Sin Must Be Fought • By not letting it get a start in our life w Romans 13: 14 w Ephesians 5: 11 • We are the ones who control that entry of sin as the desires are from within ourselves w Ephesians 2: 1 -3 • God is not the origin of those evil desires w James 1: 13 • Must stop it before it gains dominion
