“She’s on her soapbox. ” What does it mean to be on your soapbox? Someone is speaking out on a topic of importance to them. Years ago, people actually stood on wooden boxes used to ship soap. In a park or on a street corner, they would stand on the box so more people could see and hear them You will be taking part in a project called Project Soapbox, in which you will create a visual, write and present speeches on a topic which is important to you.

“Speaking Your Truth” What was Sojourner’s topic about? What was the “truth” she was speaking about? Give evidence from her speech to support your answers. What problems was she addressing? What did she want her audience to do (call to action)? What three values (think about the principles of democracy) would you be willing to speak out about in order to exercise your power in democracy? Explain each.
TASK Complete the Finding Your Truth worksheet. The issue(s) identified in the handout is a starting point for researching and writing a speech that you will develop and deliver. Keep in mind the idea that delivering your speech is a way of exercising your power in democracy.
