Sucik@cern. ch 21 -27 March 2009, Prague, Czech Republic Hiding the complexity of managing virtual machines S 3 C Web Interface 1. Server request form – choose a hostname, number of processors, amount of memory, group of administrators, expiration date, operating system, budget code and just click Request button. 2. Fully operational virtual machine is created in ~ 15 minutes, all applicable updates and applications are installed. The machine is accessible to the user using the Remote desktop client. The new infrastructure for server virtualization at CERN IT Internet Services group is based on the new solutions - Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V and System Centre Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) 2008. Hyper-V, the next generation hypervisor -based server virtualization, is an integral feature of Window Server 2008 and enables to efficiently run multiple operating systems – Windows, Linux and others in parallel on single server. System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 is unified management solution for the virtualized data center that helps enable centralized administration of physical and virtual assets, increase server utilization, and provides dynamic resource optimization of virtual IT infrastructure. Using the above mentioned products, Internet Services group in CERN IT department developed “Server Self Service Center” which simplifies provisioning of virtual servers and hides the complexity of integrating the virtual server with the rest of the computer center infrastructure.
