SERRA Prayer for VOCATIONS O God, who wills not the death of a sinner, but rather that he be converted and live, Grant we beseech You, through the intercession of the Blessed Mary, ever virgin, Saint Joseph, her spouse, Saint Junipero Serra, and all the saints, An increase of laborers for your Church, fellow laborers with Christ to spend and consume themselves for souls, through the same Jesus Christ, Your son, Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for the Perseverance of VOCATIONS O God, You have constituted Your only-begotten Son Supreme and Eternal Priest for the glory of Your majesty and the salvation of mankind, Grant that those whom He has chosen Ministers and dispensers of His mysteries May be found faithful in fulfilling the ministry they have received. Amen.

Holiness & Leadership Humility of Heart! (that we might be holy!) • It is not a self-deprecation • or having low self-esteem • But accurate view of oneself in relation to – all others, but especially to God • Humility is the underlying virtue of all virtues - the typical of all saints

How do we obtain the virtue of humility? We ask God for it! As the frequent prayer of St. Augustine… “Noscam Te, noscam me – May I know Thee; may I know myself. ” To have true knowledge of God’s greatness and of our nothingness! We are “work in progress” that every step toward the-better-version-of-ourselves is a step toward God!

Servant of God • At age 15 th he entered the Franciscan order • Ordained a priest at age 24 • Earned a doctorate in Sacred Theology at 28 • Founded 9 California missions and baptized and thousands Pame Indians • Franciscan for almost 54 years, a priest for 45 and apostolic missionary for 35 years • Declared Venerable on May 9, 1985 by Pope John Paul II • Proclaimed Blessed on September 25, 1988 by John Paul II • Canonized as Saint on September 23, 2015 by Pope Francis

Engaging priest and missionary • Held highest ranking professorship at the University of Majorca • At age 35 he was an exemplary Franciscan priest • Brilliant orator – it was recorded that “his sermon was worthy of being printed in letters of gold!” • From the pulpit, he moved his listeners to sorrow and penance for their sins • A teacher of nations (Californians/Pames Indians) • Wrote the California’s first “Bill of Rights”

I will live fully in the present and revere my tradition and calling by… o o living in the present moment - always seizing the opportunity under my control instead of fruitlessly rehashing what is past and cannot be changed cultivating solidarity, unifying the team around a common sense of mission, collaborating and translating vision into action embracing our patron saint’s motto – “Siempre Adelante, Nunca Retroceder” - not running from the future but toward it knowing that our call to holiness is the echo of God’s longing for us – “Be holy as I, your God is Holy”. 2. I will immerse myself in a complex world by… o keeping my eyes open to the joy, sufferings, and every day struggles that unfold around me and o reminding myself that I am no better than anyone else as I strive to lead with humility

Resilient • From early childhood he experienced prolonged pain and suffering, yet did not lose faith, hope or charity to answer God’s calling • He was always ill and so small of stature and not able to reach the lectern nor able to help fellow novices in needed chores • He walked thousand miles with his infected left leg and yet established 9 missions along the California coastline

To be comfortable with reality of being uncomfortable o Being who I am and ought to be (Noscam me!) o Putting a skin on the cross that God has chosen 2. I will help to create the future by… o initiating and driving change that is worthy of my beliefs and values, with hope and optimism o running to the future, not from it o learning from my mistake; as life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forward o accepting my call to leadership vocation to help create a better future – today! o grooming and setting up future leaders for success.

Reflective • Believes in the power of prayer…novenas • Always recourse to God in prayer with the intercessions of God’s Most faithful Mother and favorite saints (St. Francis Solano & St. Joseph) • Effect change where possible • accepts limits when necessary but always forward

I will sit still for daily reflection o to start and end the day with prayer & thanksgiving o to set aside sacred space every day to remind myself of my higher purpose, values, and beliefs o to know that our call to holiness is the echo of God’s longing for us – “Be holy as I, your God is Holy”. 2. I will reflect on the day and to be grateful for all that I have o to check my compass – convictions, attitudes, and habits are Christ centered o to be humble because as Jesus, our patron St. Junipero Serra was humble o “Noscam Te! Noscam me!”

Apostolic missionary • At the height of earthly honor he abandoned all (family, security and comfort) to become a missionary for the conversion of souls all for greater glory of God • Enjoyed reading the lives of saints who labored for the conversion of souls (St. Francis Solano) and had strong devotion to Mother Mary and Saint Joseph • God is the source of and reason for everything he’s done, so trusted in God and His holy purpose • He led with a great spirit of urgency, groomed and trusted his fellow priests to carry on the mission work

My religious and spiritual beliefs, and commitments will drive my action… o to lead with character (integrity, courage, authenticity, respect of self and others) o to lead with a spirit of urgency, foster collaboration, team building, and accountabilities o and to take responsibility of my leadership vocation with “apostolic fervor” to know, encourage, assist, and develop future leaders 2. Look forward to the surprise of each day… o open to the new, open to positive change (reap & reapply best practices) o Attuned to a world that is never finished, and never runs out of possibilities (think outside the box) o I may know Thee and know myself – “Noscam Te, noscam me!”
