Neh. 1: 1 -4 “The words of Nehemiah son of Hacaliah: In the month

Neh. 1: 1 -4 “The words of Nehemiah son of Hacaliah: In the month of Kislev in the twentieth year, while I was in the citadel of Susa, 2 Hanani, one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem. 3 They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire. ” 4 When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. ” Grammatically the reason for the trouble and reproach is that the walls of Jerusalem are broken down. Disgrace or shame before God because of their sins. In the context of Nehemiah where God is working behind the scenes and not miraculously the whole incident is understood to be a divinely orchestrated meeting. Neh. 1: 8 -9 “ 8 “Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses,

Neh. 1: 8 -9 “ 8 “Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations, 9 but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name. ’ Nehemiah recognizes the exile and bad state of the Jews was a result of God carrying out the covenant curses. Dt. 4: 27 “ 27 The LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and only a few of you will survive among the nations to which the LORD will drive you” See Also: Dt. 28: 64. God’s faithfulness to keep his word in the covenant curses is the hope of Nehemiah’s appeal to the covenant blessings. Dt. 30: 1 -3 “When all these blessings and curses I have set before you come upon you and you take them to heart wherever the LORD your God disperses you among the nations, 2 and when you and your children return to the LORD your God and obey him with all your heart and with all your soul according to everything I command you today, 3 then the LORD your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you and gather you again from all the nations where he scattered you. ”

Dt. 12: 5 “ 5 But you are to seek the place the LORD your God will choose from among all your tribes to put his Name there for his dwelling. ” Dt. 30: 3 “ 3 then the LORD your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you and gather you again from all the nations where he scattered you. ” Vision has connection to God’s big plan.
