(Series) A MAN CALLED PETER “GETTING MORE THAN YOU ASKED FOR!” Acts 3, 4

Acts 3: 1 -6 “Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the ninth hour, the hour of prayer. And a certain man who had been lame from his mother’s womb was being carried along, whom they used to set down every day at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, in order to beg alms of those who were entering the temple. And when he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he began asking to receive alms. And Peter along with John, fixed his gaze upon him and said, ‘Look at us!’ And he began to give them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, ‘I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene – walk!’”

Acts 3: 7 -12 “And seizing him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened. And with a leap, he stood upright and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God; and they were taking note of him as being the one who used to sit at the Beautiful Gate of the temple to beg alms, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. And while he was clinging to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them at the so-called portico of Solomon, full of amazement. But when Peter saw this, he replied to the people, ‘Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this, or why do you gaze at us, as if by our own power or piety we had made him walk? ’”

Acts 3: 13 -19 “‘The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His servant Jesus, the one whom you delivered up, and disowned in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release Him…. And on the basis of faith in His name, it is the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect health in the presence of you all. ’ And now brethren, I know that you acted in ignorance, just as your rulers did also. But the things which God announced beforehand by the mouth of all the prophets, that His Christ should suffer, He has thus fulfilled. Repent, therefore, and return, that our sins may be wiped away…. ’”

THE TIMING OF THE EVENT: THE NINTH HOUR! “Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the ninth hour, the hour of prayer…” (Acts 3: 1) THE HOURS OF PRAYER 9 A. M. 12 Noon 3 P. M.

THE LOCATION OF THE EVENT: THE TEMPLE “And a certain man who had been lame from his mother’s womb was being carried along, whom they used to set down every day at the gate of the temple which is called ‘Beautiful’…. ” (Acts 3: 2)

THE LAME MAN: (Before the miracle) 1. 2. 3. 4. He was 40 years old (Acts 4: 22) He was lame from birth He was completely disabled He was placed every day at the gate to beg for alms 5. He had no hope of any change in his condition 6. He could go to the entrance of the temple, but not into the temple “…remember, you at that time were separate from Christ…excluded from God’s people…having no hope and without God in the world. ” (Eph. 2: 12)

THE EXPECTATION! “And when he (the lame man) saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he began asking to receive alms…expecting to receive something from them. ” (Acts 3: 3, 4)

THE EVENT: AN UNEXPECTED MIRACLE! “And Peter, along with John, fixed his gaze upon him and said, ‘Look at us!’ And he began to give them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, ‘I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, walk!’ And seizing him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened. And with a leap, he stood upright and began to walk…. ” (Acts 3: 4 -8)

THE BEGGAR WHO GOT MORE THAN HE ASKED FOR! HE ASKED FOR ALMS BUT INSTEAD: HE EXPERIENCED GOD’S HEALING POWER IN HIS BODY! HE GOT SPIRITUAL HEALING FOR HIS SOUL! (HE EVEN GOT ACCESS INTO THE TEMPLE!)

“SUCH AS I HAVE – I GIVE TO YOU!” QUESTION: WHAT DO WE HAVE AS FOLLOWERS OF JESUS CHRIST THAT WE CAN GIVE TO OTHERS?

THE TRANSFORMATION “IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST, THE NAZARENE – WALK!” PHYSICAL HEALING (3: 7) WALKING AND LEAPING (3: 8) (Isa 35: 6) ENTERED THE TEMPLE (3: 8) PRAISING GOD (3: 8) ATTACHED HIMSELF TO PETER AND JOHN (3: 11) PEOPLE WERE AMAZED (3: 10)

QUESTIONS OF THE TEXT HOW DID THIS MIRACLE HAPPEN? WHO IS JESUS AND WHY IS HE IMPORTANT? WHAT’S THE SIGNIFICANCE OF HIS NAME?

QUESTION 2: WHO IS JESUS AND WHY IS HE IMPORTANT? 1. JESUS IS THE LONG AWAITED MESSIAH (ISA. 52 & 53) 2. JESUS WAS GLORIFIED BY GOD THE FATHER (ACTS 3: 13) 3. JESUS IS THE HOLY AND RIGHTEOUS ONE (ACTS 3: 14) 4. JESUS IS THE CO-AUTHOR OF LIFE WITH GOD THE FATHER (3: 15) 5. JESUS WAS RAISED FROM THE DEAD BY GOD (3: 15)

QUESTION 3: WHAT’S THE SIGNIFICANCE OF HIS NAME? WHAT DOES MEAN FOR MY LIFE TODAY?

TRUTH TO LIVE BY 1. WHAT WE HAVE TO GIVE TO THE WORLD IS FAR MORE VALUABLE THAN WHAT THEY KNOW OR EVEN EXPECT! 2. THE CONTINUAL TRANSFORMATION OF OUR LIVES BY JESUS CHRIST WILL GET THE ATTENTION OF OTHERS AND CAUSE OTHERS TO WONDER – ‘WHAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE? ’ 3. AS BELIEVERS, WE HAVE THE POWERFUL NAME OF JESUS TO BE OUR MESSAGE STILL TODAY – THE MESSAGE HAS NOT CHANGED!
