serial killer… person who murders 3 or more people over a period of more than 30 days, with a "cooling off" period between each murder - whose motivation for killing is largely based on psychological gratification.

Often, a sexual element is involved with the killings. The murders may have been attempted or completed in a similar fashion and the victims may have had something in common, for example occupation, race, appearance, gender, or age group.

Boston Strangler - Albert Desalvo (Sept. 3, 1931 – Nov. 25, 1973) was a criminal in Boston, Mass. , United States who confessed to being the "Boston Strangler", the murderer of 13 women in the Boston area. His confession has been disputed, and debate continues regarding which crimes De. Salvo actually committed.

Green River Killer - Gary Ridgway In November of 2003 he pleaded guilty to 48 counts of aggravated murder, although he says he actually killed 90 women or more, almost all prostitutes. The murders occurred in the early 1980 s. As part of a plea bargain, he was spared the death penalty and received a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

1. Aura Phase The first phase serial killers experience is withdrawal from reality. It may go unnoticed by those closest to them, but life has lost all meaning for the killer. Their senses are heightened. Violent fantasies begin to form and they feel the urge to act on them.

2. Trolling Phase This is the phase in which the killer starts to search for their victim as well as looking for a place to commit the crime or dump their body. This phase can last for months or just days, until the would-be serial killer has found the perfect victim

5. Murder Phase This is the phase where the murder takes place. Organised killers often chose to kill their victims slowly, causing them much suffering and torture before they die. Whereas disorganised killers are more likely to kill their victims instantly and commit further acts, such as necrophilia or mutilation, on their corpses

6. Totem Phase In the totem phase, the thrill of the kill begins to dissipate for serial killers. To keep some of the excitement, they will often take a souvenir from their victims, such as the clothes they were wearing or newspaper stories about the crime. These serve to remind the killer of the moment they made their warped fantasy real

7. Depression Phase The final phase in the cycle. The anticlimax causes a depression in the serial killer who comes to feel that his fantasy was not properly fulfilled. The Creation of A Serial Killer Most serial killers have dysfunctional backgrounds. Frequently they are physically, sexually or psychologically abused as children. There can be a close correlation between their childhood abuse and their crimes. It is often impossible to know exactly what happened in any individual's childhood, so some killers may deny having been abused, while others may falsely claim they were abused in an attempt to gain sympathy or tell psychologists what they want to hear.

The element of fantasy in serial killer's development cannot be overemphasized. They often begin fantasizing about murder during or even before adolescence. Their fantasy lives are very rich and they daydream compulsively about domination, submission and murder, usually with very specific elements to the fantasy that will eventually be apparent in their real crimes. Others enjoy reading stories of sadism, packed with rape, torture and murder.

Some serial killers display one or more of what are known as the “Mac. Donald Triad" of warning signs in childhood. These are: Fire starting, invariably just for the thrill of destroying things. Cruelty to animals (related to “zoosadism").
