LET’S LOOK BACK TO HIGH SCHOOL… Ser is for things that are PERMANENT and will not change (except for time) Estar is used for things that are TEMPORARY Describing what someone is like Talking about how someone feels Telling someone’s name Location of a person or object Stating someone’s ethnicity Talking about the weather Describing an object Ongoing actions (progressive tense) Used with adjectives Describing temperature Time “How you feel and where you are, always use the verb estar” Occupation

LET’S LOOK AT THE CONJUGATIONS Ser Estar (Yo) soy I am (Tú) You guys are They are (m), They are (f) You are (plural formal) eres You are es (Él, Ella, Ud. ) He is, She is, You (formal) are somos (nosotros) We are (Vosotros) sois You guys are (used in Spain) (ellos, ellas, uds. ) son They are (m), They are (f) You are (plural formal) Remember: Don’t look at these like vocabulary words. Think of the process. For example. Instead of looking at “soy” to be defined as “I am”; look at it like “Soy is the verb ser in the yo form”.
