Goals - Objectives • • • Goals 1. To learn about the Sephardic life in the Balkans 2. To learn about cultural diversity and coexistence in different Balkan countries 3. To develop cultural and religious tolerance 4. To understand that Sephardim communities in the Balkans were integral part of different Balkan societies • Objectives • A) To emphasize on personal stories • b) To find similarities between Sephardic culture and cultures of other Balkan societies; to find similarities in everyday life of Sephardim in different Balkan countries • c) To improve in the source analysis and to develop presentation and team work skills
Introduction v. Why do people migrate? v. Is this action always voluntary? v. Give examples of some migrations in history
Activity 1 • Students watch the Centropa film “El otro Camino” while they think of the following questions written on the classroom’s board § Explain how and why the Jews from Spain had to leave their country? § Show on the geographical map the countries in which the Jews from Spain settled in after the expulsion. § Why did the Ottoman sultan accept the Jews from Spain?

Discussion on photos given § § Describe what you see in the photos. When and why do you think the photos were taken? Are these photos familiar to you? If yes, from where? Do these photos come from the same country/region? § Connect the photos and the previous knowledge from the film El Otro Camino and try to guess the professions of the people from the photos.

Draw a timeline of Hana’s family and present her story connecting it with the story of Sephardic Jews • 2. Share what you have learned with the about Jewish religious life with the other group
• Students are divided in 4 Activity 4 groups • They choose from the Centropa site 2 recipes • Discuss the above: • Describe the recipes and list the ingredients • Identify similar meals that you have tasted before • Can you connect this recipe with any national recipe from your country? • Prepare and organize food tasting morning for your classmates
