Begin sentences with a participle (verbs ending in –ing and –ed) • Sitting on the dock of the bay, we watched the tide roll away. • Growing up in Mississippi during the 70 s, my dad was the lone rebel in his town. • Heated by the blazing sun, we wished we weren’t outside all day long.
Begin sentence with a prepositional phrase • After the rain, I watched the kids play in the puddles. • To the naked eye, he is a lazy man. • In another world, I would earn a million dollars for being a middle school teacher.
Appositives • My mom, a real estate agent in Georgia, sold 42 houses last year. • Brent, a student in my language arts class, is always nice to people. • Mc. Clure Middle, a school in West Cobb, is the best school in the county.
Introductory dependent clause • Although I didn’t like math, I worked very hard to do my best. • Because I am a 7 th grade teacher, I know what it’s like to be 12 years old. • If you want to be somebody else, change your mind. • As the wall fell, the Germans rejoiced.
