Simple sentences Definition: Contains one independent clause made up of a subject and a predicate In other words: one complete idea/sentence Formula: Simple sentence = Subject + Predicate

Compound sentences Definition: Adds together two or more independent clauses with a conjunction and a comma In other words: two complete sentences combined with a FANBOYS and a comma Formula: Sentence+ comma + FANBOY +sentence For And Nor But Or Yet So
Compound sentences Sentence+ comma + FANBOY +sentence Examples: Italy is my favorite country, so I plan to return soon. He wanted to see the movie, but it was sold out. Common mistake: What’s wrong here? I wanted to go to the party, but was too sick to do so.
Complex sentences Definition: contains an independent and at least one dependent clause In other words: combines a complete sentence with a phrase that IS NOT a complete sentence Formula: sentence + incomplete sentence phrase Some dependent clause (incomplete sentence phrase) beginnings: After, although, as, because, before, even if, even though, rather than, since, so that, though, unless, until, when, where, whether, while, when
