There are four different types of sentence structures l 1. Simple l 2. Compound l 3. Complex l 4. Complex-Compound
Before we get into the structures… l. Let’s practice our clauses l In your groups, write down a dependent clause and an independent clause.
Now… l Write down a sentence that has both a dependent clause and an independent clause in it. Make sure it has a subordinating conjunction!
Ok, one more… l Now write a sentence that has 2 independent clauses in it! (Hint: you need a FANBOYS to make this happen!_
Simple Sentences l Simple sentences consist of ONE independent clause Examples: l The boy ate apples and bananas for breakfast. l I love to go shopping with my friends. l Cake is good. l
Simple Sentences l A simple sentence will have only one complete set of subjects and simple predicates (verbs) l Find the subjects and simple predicates: 1. Both my horse and I are allergic to hay. A dragon makes an excellent pet and companion. Sally walked to the store and ate some bugs. 2. 3.
You try… l Write down: l 1. Simple sentence with one subject and one verb l 2. Simple sentence with 2 subjects and 1 verb l 3. Simple sentence with 1 subject and 2 verbs
Compound sentence l Has 2 independent clauses joined together with a comma and a FANBOYS l l l Examples: I ate the cake, but it gave me a tummy ache. She went to the store, and she bought some cookies. I bit the pie, so the pie bit me. I walked on the beach, yet I found no shells.
Complex Sentences Have both independent and dependent clauses. l Each dependent begins with a subordinating conjunction l If you start with a subordinating conjunction, a comma comes after that clause. l Example: l Because it was raining, I packed my poncho. l While a man was eating a cheese sandwich, behind him, was a mouse plotting to steal it. l I threw the brush at the wall because its presence angered me. l
Compound-Complex Sentences l Has two independent l Example: clauses connected with l Since it was early, a comma and Sheila ate breakfast, but FANBOYS and one or it tasted awful. more dependent clauses. l Because of the weather, we had to stay inside, so we played monopoly. l While I was running, I saw a dog, and he got hit by a car. l Because it was cold, I wore my jacket, and I stayed warm.
