Parts of the body will grow at different rates resulting in changing body proportions. Body fat increases rapidly while muscle development is more gradual. From birth to 1 month of age an infant uses limited motor skills to gain access to interesting sights and sounds. 1 -4 months of age an infant becomes aware of object permanence, object solidity, and gravity. 4 -8 months of age an infant begins to imitate behaviors and understand cause and effect. 8 -12 months of age the child exhibits intentional behavior, has the ability to find hidden objects and anticipates events. 12 -18 months the child has exploration, imitation of novel behaviors, and the ability to search in several locations for a hidden object. 18 months-2 years Internal depictions of objects and events, as indicated by sudden solutions to problems. Develop the ability to find an object that has been moved while out of sight and can play make believe. Social/Emotional Changes During this stage a child develops attachments and has the beginnings of self awareness and self control. They begin to have emotional self regulation and understand respond to the emotions of others.
