When should I move? Is coordinating help to maintain the home becoming overwhelming? Is physical safety (from falls, wandering, medication concerns) an issue? Are you or your loved one socially isolated? Do you eat alone? Do you see your friends? Are family and friends expressing concern about living in the home? Is driving becoming problematic? Are your meals of the microwave variety? Is proper nutrition a concern? Are you concerned about forgetting things? Ask yourself: Do I want to move before or during a crisis?

Senior Living Independent Living: Supportive living community that typically includes: dining, housekeeping, maintenance, activities, transportation, exercise. Assisted Living: Supportive living community that includes all of the above, but adds hands-on care with things such as: bathing, dressing, escorting, showering, grooming, toileting, and medication management. Memory Care: Supportive living community that includes all of the above, usually in a secure environment, with staff trained to assist with cueing, redirecting, and supporting the needs of residents with varying levels of dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease.

Independent Living No State licensing requirement Can be a converted apartment complex to a purpose-built community Services vary: Housekeeping may be every week, every other week, every month, etc. Meals may be one per day, two per day, 15 per month, etc. Transportation may or may not be included. If it is, transportation services are usually restricted to a certain radius from the community. Utilities, except for phone and internet (and maybe cable) are included Quality and programming of activities varies widely from community to community There is typically no medical oversight.

Results are posted online. Services provided by any assisted living facility will vary widely. Services can be provided in any space licensed by the State. Current rules do not require a nurse to be on site. The presence of nurses will vary from a nurse who simply reviews the program to nurses who work directly with residents. Some communities offering nursing availability 24/7 (this practice is becoming rare). All caregivers must hold certification. Communities may or may not require background checks, fingerprint cards,
