Attention Autism ginadavies. co. uk Attention Autism originates from the idea that successful communication is dynamic, engaging and joyful. We learn best when we work with enthusiasm, motivation and creativity. We remember good times and shared experiences. The Attention Autism approach provides the child with an experience worth communicating about. We need to make our interactions irresistible! Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 Stage 4 An example of an Easter Topic session in this 4 stage format at Jigsaw School.

Kay visits Jigsaw § Great to see the children in their own environment and see how a session works at school. § Learnt not to expect them to engage too much and that engagement is more likely to be with individuals rather than as a group

What did we all think? Tristan loved feeling the ammonite! Harman liked all the dinosaur toys and is keen to explore the animals in the museum! Oliver was nervous of the new place but once calm he liked stirring the plaster. It’s a ‘Thumbs up’ from Samuel! Toby loved watching the layers being revealed and watching the fossils being made!

Hayley: I really enjoyed the trip, it was lovely to see each pupil engaging with at least one activity. The familiar format helped the pupils know what was expected from them. Kay: Went well, especially as a totally new environment. Bubbles a great hit and also thought making fossils and visit to galleries went very well Harry is still saying…. “I want the dinosaur bubbles please!”

Going forward: • • More regular visits- African animals next month? Use the same format. Will be great regular visit during the Winter months Appropriate pupils join Early Years sessions for integration? Use School social media advertise the museum to parents Autism friendly award support Definitely more visits so the children become used to the Museum and more relaxed Make a sensory box for visitors Incorporate some of the things into our Early Birds sessions - eg what's in the box? and adding a bit more excitement
