Ethical problem As a researcher within the nuclear energy field you have to consider that the result of your research could potentially be used not only by the energy industry, but by the weapons industry. If you have a negative attitude towards the weapons industry, how do you tackle this problem (like, change your research topics. . . )?

Autonomy matrix Options: Keep doing your research. What others do with the result is none of your business. Change area of research Do only parts of the research (not in any way relevant for the weapons industry) Keep doing the research at a company (e. g. Vattenfall R&D)

Conclusion All options have pros and cons (risks and opportunities) for different stakeholders No optimal solution Change area of research: Not benefiting any of actors but in line with your values. Keep doing the research: Good for most actors, but bad for your conscience. Only do parts of the research: Both possibilities and risks for most involved actors, however, in line with your moral compass Do the research at a company: Research is still not completely safe, less available but maybe good for your career.

Conclusion Different opinions within the group. We believe that option 2, 3 and 4 are viable for different reasons. However, we did not like the first option, as all involved actors would be disadvantaged.
