Self-Awareness 21 st Century Employability Skills for High School & Opportunity Youth
What is Self-Awareness? With a partner or by yourself, write down in pictures, symbols, or words what you think Self-Awareness is. You will not need to share this with the entire class, so feel free to be creative!
The Primary Traits of Self-Awareness: • Trait 1 – Is realistic about personal strengths, skills, and areas for growth. • Trait 2 – Sees own responsibility in actions and words. Understands and responds to the needs of others. Seeks to control own emotions and behavior under stress. Tries to do the right thing. • Trait 3 – Strives to improve work appropriate manner. Learns and applies guidelines or rules of the work setting. • Trait 4 – Looks for work that is a good match for personal strengths and skills.

What’s in a name? Make your name into an acronym that expresses who you are. For instance, if the first letter of your name is C, perhaps you would write Curious. Time permitting, create an image of your name acronym.

List of Strengths and Development You can get a head start on developing your self-awareness right now. Think of five of your strengths. Write down each of these five strengths. What information have you used to identify them? List this information next to each strength. Now, write down five areas you’d like to improve in. What could you do to start to develop that skill? Write down those ideas as well! Afterwards, share your lists with people who know you well to see if others agree with your self-appraisal of strengths and areas of growth.
What is Your Personality? You might have heard of the Meyers-Briggs personality surveys. We’re going to do one today called 16 Personalities Answer the questions based on your first instinct—don’t think too much. https: //www. 16 personalities. com/free-personality-test
Discuss Results When you are finished with the survey, get into groups according to your “type” and talk to others about your results. What do you agree with? Do you think any aspects of the “personality” are not quite the right fit for you? Remember, although we may share patterns, everyone is unique!

The moral of the story is… Fables are short tales that contain moral lessons about how to act wisely. Aesop was a famous Greek storyteller who is linked to many of the fables we know today. Write down a summary of a fable you know. This could be an origin story from a culture you are familiar with, or you can look up one of Aesop’s fable on the Library of Congress’ website and make note of the moral lesson it teaches. Share with the class (or in small groups) and answer the question: Why do societies share stories that are guides for how to act and behave?

Share a time when… Have you ever been in a situation where you knew that your actions would have an effect on others, and understanding that influenced the decisions you made? Find a partner and exchange stories about times when your selfawareness helped you to act in a positive way.
Share Out Based on the stories you shared as partners, come together as a class to discuss similarities and differences in how self-awareness helped you act in a positive way. Are there any strategies (themes) you can identify that might be useful for future decision-making that is informed by impact on others?

Local Jobs Research two jobs that are currently available in your area using a job search tool like Indeed. com, Craigslist, or your local newspaper. Then, make a list of what expectations you think someone should meet in order to perform that job well. Share the lists as a group to see if there is overlap in the skills across different job types.

Individual Reflection Think of two jobs you are familiar with. They can be jobs that you’ve held, jobs family members have held, or ones you’ve read a lot of information about (including the jobs you researched from the warmup exercise). Compare and contrast what’s appropriate for a worker at each job. List: -What kind of clothing is each worker required to wear -What kind of hours is each expected to work -Who does each type of worker communicate with most -How does this affect the style of communication of each worker
Large Group Synthesis Share your compare/contracts lists with the larger group. What trends do you see in the similarities and differences across different types of work? How do expectations vary across workplaces? See how many job options are out there!
Roadtrip Nation Navigate to the Roadtrip Nation site and do the Roadmap activity: https: //roadtripnation. com/roadmap Watch two videos highlighting professionals from your “roadmap. ” Take notes on what you believe are the types of expectations these people have related to their appearance, behavior, and communication. Create a Venn diagram of these expectations: What is the same and what is different? Why do you think that is?
Reflection Think back to the results of your 16 Personalities assessment. How do the career profiles from Roadtrip Nation align with your temperament type? Journal about whether or not you believe you would be a good fit for these jobs -- what would be your strengths and what would be your areas for growth?

Knowing the Right Fit Think about the 16 Personalities assessment you took. How many people thought it was accurate? The truth is, our personalities can change depending on who we are with and where we are. We might be very outgoing with our friends, but we might prefer quiet independent tasks when completing work. Being aware of your personality, as well as the kinds of environments you work best in, helps you to evaluate “fit. ” When you go in for an interview, not only are organizations deciding if you are the right person for the job, but you are deciding if you will be happy in the position. Have you ever had a job that you knew wasn’t the right fit for you? If so, tell a partner. If not, can you imagine a type of job you wouldn’t enjoy? Share with a partner.

Mock Interviews Find a partner, and take turns interviewing one another for a job! Pick the job you’re hiring for and that your partner is interviewing for. Be sure to ask your partner questions about their interest in and knowledge of the skills that the job requires. And when it’s your turn to be interviewed, answer honestly! Afterwards, discuss with your partner whether you would be a good fit for the job you interviewed for.
Write a Job Posting Write a job posting about your “dream” job. It could be a fictional position, or it could be something that people rarely get paid to do. The key goal is to choose five aspects of the job that you could do better than anyone else, given your unique skill sets. Create a “job board” collection of all the unique individuals in your class. Using post -its, ask students to put their name by all the jobs they feel they would be a good fit for. Discuss as a class what you through this exercise: Does it seem like a lot of people think they are a good fit for the same jobs? Any common themes? Are there dream jobs for you that you hadn’t thought of?
Spotlight on Service: Ongoing Project Self-Awareness: Healthy Bragging Tips for “Healthy Bragging, ” a technique that can build self-confidence: 1. If you’ve been taught to put a lid on your victories, rip that sucker off. 2. Align yourself with people who lift you up, not tear you down or want to bond through wallowing. 3. Do it with class and share the stage. 4. Stop comparing. 5. Like attracts like—focus on the good! Do you think this concept fits with what you have learned about Self-Awareness? How might this benefit a group as a shared activity if everyone within a community can be recognized?
Spotlight on Service: Ongoing Project Self-Awareness: Healthy Bragging -With our class/group, we’ll determine how we might implement a daily or weekly kudos program in which each individual in the class has an opportunity to “Healthy Brag. ” -We’ll decide how we might highlight individuals throughout the semester: how we might discover more about that person, what recognitions someone receives, and the best way to celebrate publically—perhaps on morning announcements, the school newspaper, or in a You. Tube video. -As we progress through the term, we’ll discuss what is going well and what could be improved with our approach, along with the changes the program brings about in our attitudes/mindsets. How could we bring this concept into our other projects and into your potential workplaces?
