+ Self Esteem n What is self esteem? According to the dictionary it is: “Confidence in one’s own abilities or worth; self respect” n Sometimes your self esteem can change based on your daily interactions and experiences. n How well you did on a test n Getting a correct or incorrect answer n Relationships n Sports
+ n Self Esteem: Poor vs. Healthy Poor or Unhealthy: n Rely on how they are doing in the present to determine how they feel about themselves. n Need positive compliments to counteract the constant negative feeling about yourself. Healthy: n Able to acknowledge their strengths and weaknesses and still be happy with themselves. n Acceptance of self n Compliments, good grades and accomplishments only provide temporary boost in self-esteem. n Understanding and embracing self worth n Tend to be negative n Do not put value in other’s negative opinions n Able to take criticism in a positive manner
+ Accomplishments: n Writing down and acknowledging your accomplishments can put into perspective all the great things you have done. n Recognizing your accomplishments can help to raise yourself esteem! n Accomplishments to consider: n Clubs and organizations your are apart of have won competitions in School activities Sports Grades Helping others Assignments and tasks you have completed Fears you have overcame n Write down 5 of your accomplishments! n n n
+ Recreational Activities n Recreational activities are things you do for fun. So, outside of school, what do you do for fun or enjoyment. n Identifying your recreational activities helps you to see other aspects of your personality. n Recreational activities are also great because they can be stress relievers and help to cheer you up or calm you down during tough times. This is known as a positive coping skill. n Write down at least 3 of your favorite recreational activities.
+ Abilities and Skills n Abilities and Skills are qualities of being able to do something that can be learned through experience or training. n Ability Example: some people have musical ability in which they can perform or understand music well. Even with little or no direction. n Skill Example: some people have scientific skills that they learned through science class, science clubs or outdoor recreational activities. These skills were developed and refined over time.
+ Personality: n Definition: the combination or qualities that form an individuals' distinctive character. n Understanding your personality helps you to identify your strengths and weakness. n Take color personality test! n Once you have taken your personality test, write down 5 words that describe you!
+ Goal Setting: n Why set goals? n Give you a direction to work towards n Clear picture of where you want to go n Give you motivation and focus n Help you to push yourself n Help you to have fun and lead a more fulfilling life n Research has shown that people who set goals and use them effectively are more successful and suffer from less stress and anxiety.
+ Goal Setting Activity #1: n Goal Setting Quiz n Let’s set some goals! Goal Setting Activity #1 n Which subjects would you like to try and improve this year and why? n How much would you like to improve your results by? (List a percentage, grade or target) n What could you do this year in order to improve in particular subject? n Listen? n Stay on task? n Ask questions?
+ Goal Setting: Long Term vs. Short Terms n Ask your self: n What are you looking forward to doing or achieving tomorrow? n What are you looking forward to doing or achieving in the next year? n What are you looking forward to doing or achieving in 10 years? n Often our short, medium and long terms goals are related. n It is best to first think of your long term goals and then set your medium and short term goals.
+ Goal Setting Activity #2: n Your job is to set 1 long term goal. n Next you need to set 1 medium and 1 short term goals that will help you to meet your long term goal. n Think about: n Career n Sports n Self Improvement n Graduating for High School n College n Friends
+ How to set realistic goals: Think SMARTIES n Specific- detail n Measurable – measure whether or not you have reached your goal n As if now- As though you have already achieved them n Realistic – Do not make goals impossible n Timebound- Timeframe on when you will achieve this goal n Interesting- Make your goals about something worthwhile n Emotional- Use powerful language n Success – Express your goals in a positive way
