Why? Selecting appropriate examples in reading and writing papers is really important. You have to make sure you stick to what you’re talking about and don’t go off track because if you go off track you’ll just lose marks in your work.

What are they used for? Examples are used so people have a reference to go by when reading your work, instead of being confused as to how you have any evidence of what your point is.

How can it raise your grade? When a test marker sees that you have used examples in your work, it gives you more to talk about, and them more to be impressed by. It can raise your grade as you have solid evidence that your point is correct, and this can impress the marker. How can that be a bad thing? I don’t think it can…

Why do they have to be appropriate? Going off track in an exam paper isn’t a good idea, it may look like you have written a lot of work but when it’s read through, things might not make sense or you could be poorly -marked due to you going off track. Think about being the marker yourself and you’ve been marking work for a fair few hours now. . . Do you really want to be reading something that is off-track? No, you’d want to read something that’s good to mark and fun to read (humour? ) you can give a good grade for!
