Executive summary Situation Info-Tech Insight • Firewalls are not yet a solution of the past. They are one of 1. Prepare for moveable workloads. • a few security solutions that has evolved to reflect the needs of its consumers and the marketspace by offering a more consolidated product featuring important security capabilities. However, it is not an easy fix to your security issues. 2. Complication • Like most security solutions, NGFWs are not a one-size-fits • -all choice. Organizations can get caught up in flashy sales pitches and attractive visuals, forgetting that the important consideration for firewalls is how they work in your unique environment. It’s about use cases. 3. Security can’t be statically assigned. Rather, it must be able to move as your data moves. Choose a vendor that’s evolving and adapting to stay ahead. Use innovative data displays to build your data flow model. Unique visualizations of data (demonstrating threats, heavy bandwidth usage, which users are using which apps, and being able to click to mitigate right away) help organizations get a sense of where their data is going and which threats to prepare for. Throughput matters. You need to know how the solution will work with all of its features switched on. Know your traffic and scale appropriately. Resolution • Before considering an NGFW, organizations must have a strong understanding of the traffic over their network and what • • the future of their organization might hold (cloud, more bandwidth, etc. ). NGFWs are able to handle a lot and they offer a variety of features, but organizations need to determine scalability and specific feature needs to prevent over- or under-engineering their firewall decision and suffering network problems as a result. Fortunately, today’s firewalls come in a range of throughputs and threat protection potential. The real resolution comes from conducting the appropriate requirements gathering both for architecture and protection needs – cover your bases and there will be fewer instances of regret. Phase 1 outline Call 1 -888 -670 -8889 or email Guided. Implementations@Info. Tech. com for more information. Complete these steps on your own, or call us to complete a guided implementation. A guided implementation is a series of 23 advisory calls that help you execute each phase of a project. They are included in most advisory memberships. Guided Implementation 1: Launch the NGFW selection project Proposed Time to Completion: 1 -3 months Step 1. 1 – 1. 2: Identify the need for a next generation firewall Step 1. 3: Identify the most appropriate use case Start with an analyst kick-off call: Review findings with analyst: • Understand Info-Tech’s offerings for initiating your NGFW selection and implementation process. • Review your procurement document. Then complete these activities… • Understand what makes an NGFW different, and if one would fulfill your organization’s needs. • Formalize the selection process by developing an NGFW Procurement Project Charter. • Identify which use case aligns best with your organization’s NGFW needs. • Determine preliminary metrics that may be useful in tracking the effectiveness of the NGFW solution. With these tools & templates: NGFW Procurement Project Charter Template NGFW Use-Case Fit Assessment Tool Phase 1 Outcomes: • Determine if an NGFW solution is what makes sense for your organization (advanced, consolidated capabilities vs. a regular stateful firewall) and gather your requirements. Formalize the procurement process by developing a project charter and identifying which metrics will be tracked to measure the success of the NGFW implementation. Info-Tech Research Group 11
