Seismic Waves By Hayden
Tectonic plates • Tectonic plates are where the earths shell is cracked
Earthquakes • Earthquakes are when energy is relesed from the earths crust.
Faults • Faults are when the outer layer is break along and move.
Seismograph and seismogram • A Seismograph is a tool that measures the earthquakes energy.
Primary waves are also called p waves. P waves are the fastest wave. P waves are 1 st to arrive at a distant point. P waves travel through solids, liquids, and gases.
Secondary waves are called S waves are slower than p waves. Arrives latter at a distant point S waves go through solids
Surface waves are called l wave L waves are Slowest of all waves. L waves are Felt at the Suface L waves cause the most damage
Crust • The crust is earths outer most layer • It is the thinnest layer • We live on it • The crust is made of solid rock • Deeper under continents than oceans
Mantle • The mantle is earths thickest layer • It's the layer of rock lying below the crust • The mantle allows tectonic plates to slowly move • Rocks move or flow due to pressure and high temperatures
Outer core • Made of melting iron • Totally liquid • Inner core floats in this layer
Inner Core • Solid sphere • Center of the earth • Spins at a different rate than the rest of the planet
