Segments – addition and Bisectors
Postulate A statement that is accepted to be true without having to prove it.
Segment A piece of a line with two end points.
Collinear Points belonging to the same line.
Distance The absolute value of the difference of the coordinates of the points
Length The distance between two endpoints of a segment.
Finding the length of a segment
• Using your straight edge (ruler), draw a line segment that is 10 centemeters long. • Label one end point J, and the other endpoint L. • Put a point, K, anywhere on JL. • Measure the distance from J to K, round it to the nearest half centimeter. • Measure the distance from K to L, round it to the nearest half centimeter.

Segment Addition Postulate Points A, B, and C are collinear. AB + BC = AC
Example 1 If B is between A and C and AB = 4 and BC = 5, find AC.
Example 2 If AB = x, BC = x + 6, AC = 24, find AB and BC.
Example 3 Find LM if L is between N and M, NL = 6 x – 5, LM = 2 x + 3 and NM = 30.
Intersection Where a line and/or a plane meet or cross.
Bisect To divide into two equal parts
Midpoint A single point in the middle of a segment.
Congruence Having the same size and same shape.
Example 4 Use midpoints to find length. E is the midpoint of GO. GE = 3 x-5 and EO= 2 x + 1 Find GE, EO, and GO.
