European States and Religion It was hard to freely practice religion in 1500. European rulers believed that they needed to support a particular religion, known as established church. In England, the monarch was named head of church in 1530. Separatist sought religious freedom. Faced persecution Some left for Netherlands where they could practice freely

The Pilgrims Colony at Plymouth November 1620, the Mayflower arrived with 100 men, women and children off Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Mayflower Compact-Written because they were not in Virginia, so new document created to govern colonists.

Mayflower Compact 41 males signed the Compact Unite to abide by all the laws “the general Good of the Colony” Estabished an important tradition. Strengthened the ability to govern the colony and ensured representative government.

Early Hardships First Winter, not enough corn to feed the colonists. Many starved or died of diseases. Most lived in sod houses. Nearly half of the colonist died including the first governor. William Bradford replaced him Bradford’s leadership helped the remaining colonists known as the “Starving Time”

Native American Help Spring came, Pilgrims cleared the land. Samoset, a Pemaquid Indian, knew English Massasoit, chief of the Wampanoag Squanto-lived with English, John Smith, knew English and brought seeds of native plants, corn, squash, pumpkins. Harvest time, God had brought about this harvest, “Thanksgiving”
