Eye Anatomy
How the Eye Works • Pathway of light rays through the eye • Cornea aqueous humor iris/pupil lens vitreous humor fovea/macula retina rods/cones optic nerve brain
Eye Anatomy • Cornea: – Clear outer part of the eye – Helps focus in front of the eye
Eye Anatomy • Aqueous Humor – – thin, watery fluid fills the space between the cornea and the iris nourishes the cornea and the lens gives the front of the eye its form and shape.
Eye Anatomy • Iris – Colored part of the eye – Regulates the amount of light entering the eye
Eye Anatomy • Pupil – Opening at the center of the iris – Size of opening controlled by iris
Eye Anatomy • Lens – Clear part of the eye behind the iris – Focus light onto retina – Allows focus on near and far objects
Eye Anatomy • Vitreous Humor: clear gel filling the inside of the eye
Eye Anatomy • Macula – Small, sensitive area of retina – Central vision – Contains fovea
Eye Anatomy • Fovea – Center of the macula – Sharpest vision – high concentration of rods (B & W) and cones (Color)
Eye Anatomy • Retina – Light sensitive tissue – Lines the back of the eyeball – Sends electrical impulses to the brain
Rod cells • Located in retina • Sensitive to light • “night vision” • Black and white • Modified neuron
Cone cells • Located in retina • Distinguish colors in daylight • Modified neuron
Eye Anatomy • Optic Nerve – Bundle of sensory nerve fibers (over one million) – Carries visual information to the brain (occipital lobe)
Miscellaneous Eye Structures • Choroid: layer of blood vessels that feeds the retina
Miscellaneous Eye Structures • Eyelid – skin-covered structure – Protection – Spreads tears – Limits light entrance
Miscellaneous Eye Structures • Sclera – “whites of the eyes” – Tough outer coat
Retina Scan • Identification through distinguishing marks of the eye (retina)
Myopia • Near sighted – Can only clearly see objects up close – Lens focuses light/image in front of the fovea
Hyperopia • Far sighted – Can only clearly see objects far away – Lens focuses light/image in back of the fovea
Eye diseases • Cataracts – Clouding of the lens – Accumulation of dead cells – Images look blurred or fuzzy
Eye diseases • Astigmatism – Irregular shaped cornea or lens (correctable) – Focus on two or more points instead of one – Blurred vision, headaches, eye strain
Eye diseases • Glaucoma – Silent thief of sight – Gradually builds up pressure inside the eye (retinal cells and optic nerve dies) – Can cause irreversible blindness
Eye diseases • Conjunctivitis: AKA Pink Eye – Inflammation of the conjuctiva (clear membrane that covers the sclera) – Usually caused by bacteria or viruses
