SECTORS OF THE ECONOMY EMS GRADE 9
THREE SECTORS OF THE ECONOMY (based on their stage in the production process) Primary Where Sector: goods are extracted or produced straight from nature Example of industries – farming, forestry, mining and fishing. Secondary Sector Involved in producing goods extracted from nature in the primary sector. Examples Tertiary – Factory or Manufacturing process. Sector Involved in Selling a good or producing a service. Examples – Retail/Trading businesses, Insurance , banking etc.
Skills required in the different sectors: Primary Most workers in the primary sector are unskilled. (Physical labour more important than intellectual) Secondary Most workers are unskilled or semi-skilled (Physical labour as well as the skill to specialise in repetitive work) Tertiary Requires most workers to be skilled and have good people and teamwork skills)
Main role of the Tertiary Sector Provide goods and services by distributing it to consumers. By marketing and making consumers aware of the products Examples of Retailing in the Tertiary Sector Pick n Pay Shoprite Mr Price Group etc.
The importance using natural resources sparingly in the primary sector: If the primary sector does not use natural resources responsibly, they will not be able to provide resources to the secondary sector which will in turn not be able to produce goods and services provided by the tertiary sector. For example Fuel must be used responsibly by the primary sector so that the secondary sector can produce it into diesel and petrol which is provided by the tertiary sector to consumers. Without fuel consumer (individual and businesses) will not be able to use transport.
