Sectionalism & State Sovereignty • Sectionalism: As America continued to grow, the difference between regions grew. Instead of saying you were an American, you were either a New Yorker or a Virginian. • The South remained an agrarian – farm like- region that depended on slavery. • The North boomed into an industrial region – factories- that did not rely on slavery. • State Sovereignty: Many southerners worried that the American government favored the north’s industry over the south’s agriculture. As a result, many wanted the individual state governments to have more power than the Federal government. (State’s rights).

The Missouri Compromise 1820 Both the north and the south were worried about losing power. (i. e. , if the south has more states, they have more votes and more power. ) When Missouri and Maine wanted to become states, both sides wanted both states. In the end, Missouri became a slave state, Maine became a free state. Also, slavery was banded north of the 36” 30” parallel line.
