Sectional Views n Additional orthographic views to expose internal features (features that will appear hidden in standard ortho views)
Sectional views have: a. Cutting plane shown as edge view: cutting plane line b. Cutting plane arrow direction of line of sight c. Section lines (hatch) areas where solid material has been cut
Cutting Plane: Cutting Plane Linestyles
Section Lines n Spacing: ¨ evenly n at 1/16 -1/8” apart (final drawing) Direction ¨ 45°, but not parallel or perpendicular to outline of object n Symbols ¨ depend on the material
Section line orientation
ANSI standard section lines
• Generally, we don’t show hidden lines.

Full Section n n Cutting plane cuts fully through object, remove half How hidden lines become solid (serve as boundary of section lines)
Half Section n Cutting plane passes halfway through object. Used for symmetric parts. Omit hidden lines.
Offset Section n n Cutting plane line not straight but offset to pass through important features Don’t show cut formed by offset
Aligned Section n n Align sections cut at an angle (for circular shapes). Foreshortened view is not an accurate view.
Phantom Section n As if viewed by an x-ray Like regular view with added section lines Keep hidden lines
Broken-out section • break away some of the object. • a break line (jagged edge) separates the sectioned from un-sectioned part of the view. • no cutting plane line drawn.
Revolved section • Revolve the cross-section view 90 degrees about an axis. • Visible lines adjacent to the section can either be drawn or broken out. • Axis of revolution is drawn on the revolved view as a center line.
Removed section • made in a manner similar to revolved sections. • the cross section is then drawn adjacent to the orthographic view. • used when there is not enough room on the orthographic view for a revolved section.
