Religions Today �A religion is a particular system of faith and worship �The ‘big five’ world religions are: �Hinduism �Judaism �Buddhism �Christianity �Islam �All these religions have members in Ireland today
Hinduism �An ancient world religion that began in the Indus Valley �No known founder �A polytheistic faith = belief in many Gods �Reincarnation – a cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth �The ultimate goal is Moksha or union with God
Judaism �The founding fathers were Abraham, Isaac and Jacob �A monotheistic faith = belief in one God �Based on an agreement or ‘covenant’ with God �The Torah (or instruction) is central to Judaism
Buddhism �Began in Northeast India in the sixth century BCE �Founded by Prince Siddhartha Gautama �Siddhartha achieved enlightenment, becoming the ‘Buddha’ or enlightened one �Main teachings summed up in the Four Noble Truths
Christianity �A monotheistic faith �Began in Israel about 2, 000 years ago �Based on the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth �Jesus is seen as the Messiah, the Son of God �Writings found in the Bible
Islam �A monotheistic faith �Began in Saudi Arabia in the seventh century �Based on the teachings of the Prophet Mohammad �Mohammad is the final messenger of God �Writings found in the Quran
Faith and Belief �Faith – complete trust or confidence in someone or something; a strong belief in the teachings of a particular religion and commitment to following them �Belief – something one accepts as true or real; a religious conviction. To believe is to have faith.
Inspiring Vision �An inspiring vision is a view of the way the world could be �Martin Luther King had an inspiring vision: ‘I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character’
Vocation and Mission �Vocation – a calling to do something �Frederic Ozanam, founder of the St Vincent de Paul, had a vocation: ‘Let us go to the poor’ �Mission – the calling of religious communities to go out and spread their faith
