Section 9. 5 Adding, Subtracting, & Complex Fractions
Adding Fractions What do you need in order to add or subtract two fractions? A COMMON DENOMINATOR!!!!! What do we need to multiply 4 by to get 8? If we multiply the bottom by 2, we need to multiply the top by 2.
Subtracting Fractions What’s going to be our common denominator? What do multiply 5 by to get 20? Remember to multiply top and bottom. What do multiply 4 by to get 20? Remember to multiply top and bottom.
Try a Couple!
Adding Fractions We already have a common denominator. The variable comes first and the constant comes last. We need a common denominator. What will it be? What do we need to multiply x by to get 3 x? What do we need to multiply 3 by to get 3 x?
Subtracting Fractions We already have a common denominator. We need a common denominator. What will it be? What do we need to multiply 2 x by to get 4 x? What do we need to multiply 4 by to get 4 x?
Try a Couple! 1. 2.
Adding Fractions We already have a common denominator.
Adding Fractions We need a common denominator. What will it be? We have an x and an x – 1, so it will be x(x – 1) What do we need to multiply x by to get x(x – 1)? What do we need to multiply x – 1 by to get x(x – 1)?
Subtracting Fractions We already have a common denominator.
Subtracting Fractions We need a common denominator. What will it be? We have a 2, an x and an x – 1, so it will be 2 x(x – 1) What do we multiply 2 x by to get 2 x(x – 1)? What do we multiply (x – 1) by to get 2 x(x – 1)?
What’s there? What’s missing? How do you get it there? You Try Some! 1. 2. 3. 4.
Simplifying Complex Fractions 1. 2. Create a Common Denominator for all parts. Cancel & Simplify.
Let’s Simplify Another! 1. 2. Create a Common Denominator for all parts. Cancel & Simplify.
Try a Few! 1. 2. 3. 1. 2. Create a common denominator. Cancel & Simplify.
