Section 5. 2 Adding and Subtracting Decimals
Adding Decimals • Steps 1. Line up the numbers using the decimal vertically. 2. If needed add zeros for place holders. 3. Starting from the far right number, add • If it is a double digit carry the tens number over. 4. Carry the decimal down
Example • Simplify 734. 89 + 640. 56
Example • Simplify 27. 125 + 52. 54 + 2. 3
Subtracting Decimals • Steps 1. Line up the numbers using the decimal vertically. 2. If needed add zeros for place holders. 3. Starting from the far right number, subtract • If the top # is smaller than the bottom #, borrow. 4. Carry the decimal down
Example • Simplify 78. 894 – 12. 125
Example • Simplify 100 – 0. 526
Example • Simplify 8. 53 – 17. 84
