Types of Fractions • A PROPER FRACTION is a fraction whose numerator is less than the denominator. • An IMPROPER FRACTION is a fraction whose numerator is more than the denominator.
Example • Given the fraction determine which is a proper fraction and which is an improper fraction.
Mixed Numbers • A number consisting of a whole number and a proper fraction.
Geometric Representation • Writing the value of a proper fraction, improper fraction and a mixed number in diagrams.
Geometric Representation • Writing the value of a proper fraction, improper fraction and a mixed number in diagrams. • The fraction 3/8 in geometric form.
Geometric Representation • Cut the figure into equal pieces, based on the denominator. • Fill in the correct number of pieces, based on the numerator. • Create a geometric representation for
Example • Create a geometric representation for
Example • Create a geometric representation for
Example • Write the fraction.
Converting : Improper Fraction to Mixed Number 1. Use long division, numerator ÷ division. 2. The answer on top will become the whole number. 3. The remainder will become the new numerator. 4. The denominator will stay the same.
Example • Convert to a mixed fraction.
Converting : Mixed Number to Improper Fraction 1. 2. 3. 4. Given : whole number, numerator and denominator. Multiply whole number with denominator. Add result with numerator. Place result in the numerator, keep the denominator.
Example • Convert to an improper fraction.
Example • Given the geometric representation write it in proper fraction, improper fraction, and mixed number form.
