Section 12. 1 Explore Solids
Vocabulary • Polyhedron – is a solid that is bounded by polygons called Face • Edge – is the line segment formed by the intersection of two faces • Vertex – a point where three or more edges meet • Base – are the two congruent parallel polygons for a prism and a polygon for a pyramid
Vocabulary (Cont. ) • Regular Polyhedron – all the faces are congruent regular polygons • Convex Polyhedron – if any two points on its surface can be connected by a segment that lies entirely inside or on the polyhedron • Platonic solids – five regular polyhedron named after Plato • Cross Section – intersection of a plane and a solid

Theorem 12. 1: Euler’s Theorem
Identify and name polyhedra Tell whether the solid is a polyhedron. If it is, name the polyhedron and find the number of faces, vertices, and edges. a. b.
Tell whether the solid is a polyhedron. If it is, name the polyhedron and find the number of faces, vertices, and edges. c.
Use Euler’s Theorem in a real-world situation House Construction Find the number of edges on the frame of the house.
Use Euler’s Theorem with Platonic solids Find the number of faces, vertices, and edges of the regular octahedron. Check your answer using Euler’s Theorem.
