Measurement Most scientists & almost all countries use the International System of Units (SI). One advantage of using SI measurements is that they help all scientists share & compare their observations & results. Another advantage of SI is that all units are based on the number 10.
Measurement cont. A meter (m) is the basic SI unit of length. Area is a measure of the size of a surface or a region & is based on two measurements (length x width). The units for area are square units, such as km 2, & cm 2.
Measurement cont. Mass is the amount of matter in an object. The kilogram (kg) is the basic SI unit for mass. Grams are used to measure the mass of smaller objects. Kilograms are used to measure the mass of larger objects.
Measurement cont. Volume is a measure of the size of a body in three-dimensional space. Units for liquid volume- L, m. L Use a graduated cylinder to measure the volume of liquids
Measurement cont. Units for solid volume- m 3, cm 3, mm 3 To calculate the volume of a box-shaped object, multiply length x width x height. To find the volume of an irregularly shaped object, measure the volume of liquid that the object displaces.
Measurement cont. Temperature is a measure of how hot (or cold) something is. Kelvin (K) is the SI base unit for temperature. Other temperature units: Celsius and Fahrenheit
Measurement cont. Density is the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance. Density =Mass Volume Units for density: g/m. L, g/cm 3, kg/L, kg/m 3
Safety Rules! Always follow your teacher’s instructions. Don’t take shortcuts. Read lab procedures carefully and thoroughly. Pay special attention to safety information and caution statements.
