Objectives ● SOL 2. 2 ● ● The student will compare the lives and contributions of three American Indian cultures of the past and present, with emphasis on the Powhatan of the Eastern Woodlands, the Lakota of the Plains, and the Pueblo peoples of the Southwest. The Students will learn about the Lakota Indian Tribe and the types of food they hunted, gathered, and consumed. The students will connect to the lesson by “hunting and gathering” for food like the Lakota Indians, and create an ideal meal based off of the foods that were available using myplate. The students will be able to try a “new” food.

The hunting and gathering activity can be used; the number of items to gather can be modified.

Laminate cut outs of food items will be hidden around the classroom for the students to hunt and find. ● Ex) Fish in a “river”; buffalo in a “pasture”; berries in a “bush” ● ● Put magnets on the back of each cut of: fish, blackberries, strawberries, apples, and grapes. In one corner of the room, lay out a hula-hoop to represent a body of water. Put several fish (with magnets attached) inside the hula-hoop. ● Make “fishing rods” by tying a piece of string to the end of a pencil. Attach a paperclip to the other end of the string. Make one for each group.

Draw several pictures of bushes on the White/Chalk board, and stick the magnetic berries inside the “bushes” that are drawn on the board. Next to the bushes, draw trees for the apples and vines for the grapes. Place the magnetic cut outs on the board. Designate a spot in the room to be the crop field. Place rows of corn, sweet potatoes, squash, peanuts, sunflowers (seeds), and wild rice.

The classroom will be modified to resemble the outdoors and different food items that the Lakota Indians would have eaten will be hidden around the room in various locations (ex: Fish in a “river”; Buffalo in a “pasture”; Berries in a “bush” etc. )

Each food item on the hunting list will also include a locomotive skill that all students in the group must do until they find that item. ● ● For the fishing corner: The teacher will assign a student to be the “fisherman. ” To catch the fish, the student will hold the pencil and use the paperclip on the string to connect the paperclip with the magnet on the fish. The students will put the items they find in their group basket.
