Second chance Reentry Program By, John Levanti
What our program does • We give ex convicts a chance to earn their GED and take courses that help them find out what career they may want to pursue. • Government funds were provided to us for mentorship, education, job training, and to provide an overall positive environment for ex convicts to hang out at during the day.
Community Need • Each year, more than 600, 000 inmates are released nationwide, but studies show that two-thirds are re-arrested within three years. https: //www. bjs. gov/index. cfm? ty=tp&tid=17
Community Need • In 2008, over 36% of exprisoners had not earned a high school diploma or GED. Only 11% of former prisoners had taken any college courses. https: //www. bjs. gov/index. cfm? ty=tp&tid=17
Logical Approach
Lit Review Charles E. Kelso In this study, The University of Washington conducted studies on recidivism and whether rehabilitation programs made a difference. After completing two years in the program they concluded that recidivism was cut in half from 30. 9% to 14. 3%. Thom Gehring In this study they measure the success of just the correction facilities ability to help stop recidivism without another program such as ours. They concluded that almost nothing improved recidivism without an outside program after they are released. Paul J. Gruenewald and Barbara R. West This study first off analyzes whether age has any impact of whether people are more prone to recidivism, which it does not until the ex convict is elderly. They concluded in the study that the thing that has the greatest positive impact for ex cons is a rehabilitation program.
