Internal and external factors regulate the cell cycle. • Growth Factor: a broad group of proteins that stimulate the cell cycle. (Set by genes) • Apoptosis: a programmed cell death. • Cancer: uncontrolled cell division/ a mistake in the cell cycle. • Malignant: a tumor that has cancerous cells which can break away.
• Benign: non cancerous cells remain clustered together. • carcinogen is a cancer-causing agent that creates mutations in a cell
Cancer Treatment • Chemotherapy: Uses drugs that travel throughout the body to kill actively dividing cells. • Radiation: Uses radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors in a specific location.
Asexual Reproduction • Asexual reproduction: the creation of offspring from a single parent cell. • Binary Fission: A single-celled organism divides into two parts.
Multicellular Life • Tissues: a group of cells working together to perform a similar function. • Organ: are made up tissues • Organ System: Organs carrying out similar functions • Cell differentiation: unspecialized cells become developed into mature forms and functions. • Stem cells: A cell that can stay the same or develop into a specialized cell.
Types of Stem Cells • Totipotent: Can lead to any type of stem cell. • Pluripotent: Can lead to all cells except totipotent. • Multipotent: Can lead to closely related cells.
