Apprentices within SMG Two active public cohorts Planning for January 2020 Summer 2020 April: four apprentices Six apprentices Private cohort: 12 -20 apprentices October: four apprentices
Chief Nursing Officer champion Approval from Regional Medical Directors Required Support Program coordinators working directly with clinic leadership
Apprentices participate in a rigorous interview process All apprentices are paired with a trained MA preceptor Why It Works • MA preceptors must meet initial program requirements and be endorsed by a manager or supervisor • Specialized training class required • Preceptors receive a $1 differential while actively precepting Attending the 10 -day new caregiver orientation is required • Apprentices receive an additional two days of "MA 101" training prior to starting in the clinic Regular check-ins and observations are scheduled • Six weeks, three months, six months, and more if necessary
Clinic Participation THE CLINIC SUPERVISOR(S), MA APPRENTICE PRECEPTOR (COACH), AND PARTICIPATING PROVIDER MEET WITH THE SMG PROGRAM COORDINATORS PRIOR TO THE APPRENTICE STARTING IN ORDER TO REVIEW THE PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS. MA APPRENTICES PARTICIPATE IN LAB AND SPECIALTY CARE ROTATIONS TO MEET THE SKILL REQUIREMENTS CLINIC SUPERVISOR AND MA PRECEPTOR BOTH ATTEND THE KICK-OFF EVENT
Budget Considerations Additional coverage/staff provided for MA preceptors attending training classes Cost of program coordinator Cost of premium pay for MA preceptors Tuition cost ($3750) paid for by the organization MA apprentices receive a salary and full benefits for the year they are employed as an apprentice Apprentices who leave the program early, or do not complete the two-year work agreement are required to repay prorated program costs to SMG
