SE 201: Introduction to Systems Engineering (2 -0 -2) n Catalog Description n : Introduction to Systems Engineering. Some areas of Industrial Engineering/Operations Research: facility location, quality control, production planning, and linear programming. Some areas of Automation/Control Engineering: concepts of automatic control, open and closed loop control, and use of computers in control. Systems approach to engineering problems, integrating the above tools. Applications of system concepts in engineering. Prerequisites : MATH 102.
n Prerequisites by topic: n n n Applications of definite integrals. Logarithmic, exponential, and inverse trigonometric functions. Infinite series of positive terms. Textbook : Turner, Mize, Case, and Nazemetz, Introduction to Industrial and Systems Engineering, Third Edition, 1993. Course Objectives : This course introduces students to Systems Engineering concepts and methodology, and to the two SE options: (i) Industrial Engineering & Operations Research (IE/OR), and (ii) Automation & Control (A/C). The course also gives a broad picture of Systems Engineering applications, fields of study, and career opportunities.
Learning Outcomes: n n Toward the end of the course, the student must be able to do the following: Define Systems Engineering, and identify its main tools, applications, and career paths. Identify the Common features of the two SE options: IE/OR, and A/C. Understand the basic concepts, terminology, and applications of the following IE/OR areas: n n n n Facility Location and Layout.
