Mentor Program Background Created by the S. D. Legislature in 2016 to provide for the mentoring of teachers new to the profession. Desired Outcomes: • Increase numbers & retention of new teachers • Improve quality of instruction • Strengthen the community of educators in SD • Develop teacher leaders
Phases of New Teachers
Program Requirements • Mentor Professional Learning Community – (Mentor Seminar & Three Webinars) • Attend Kick-Off (Mentors & New Teachers) • Provide 34 hours of mentoring based on mentor guidelines to include focus on South Dakota Framework for Teaching (minimum of 18 hours faceto-face – Mentors Maintain mentor log - New Teachers will need a log as well if they are taking it for grad credit • Attend Summer Academy (Mentors & New Teachers) - June 5 -6, 2019 in Sioux Falls
May 1 Deadline • Must be turned in to the State by May 1 – All Sub reimbursement for mentoring – Travel reimbursement for mentoring – Mentor Logs (collected by Development Team and district-run leads)
Final Invoice after Summer Academy • Final invoice includes: – Summer Academy Travel • Mileage at $0. 42/mile and hotel – Rooms still available at Ramkota! – Mentor Stipends at $1, 500 per mentor – 13. 65% of the mentor stipend for district payroll costs • Invoice us for $1, 705. 00 (mentor gets $1, 500)
Summer Academy Reimbursement • June 5 -6 in Sioux Falls Convention Center – June 5: 4: 00 pm – 8: 00 pm – June 6: 8: 00 am – 4: 00 pm • Reimbursements – Mileage – Hotel (blocks of rooms at Ramkota) – (meals provided) • Submit reimbursements to State by June 11 – You can invoice us before you pay hotel
Mentor Stipend • Mentor receives $1, 500 ($1, 300 for additional new teachers) for: – Mentor Seminar – Kick-off – Providing 34 hours of support to new teacher – Three Mentor Webinars – Summer Academy • Stipends prorated if mentor does not fulfill all requirements • District submits invoice after the Summer Academy (by June 11)
Final Invoice • Example: District has 3 mentors and 3 new teachers • Final invoice includes: Goes to the District $xxx. xx $4, 500. 00 $614. 25 Summer Academy Travel (mileage at $0. 42/mile and hotel) 3 Mentor Stipends at $1, 500 each 13. 65% of $4, 500 to offset district payroll costs $5, 114. 25 + Total invoice amount $xxx. xx
FAQ • What if a mentor does not complete all of the program requirements, such as attend the Summer Academy? – The stipend will be reduced at a 2% rate per hour. If a mentor did not attend the summer academy, they would be short 9 hours. $1500 *. 02*9 = $270, so they would get $1, 230
