Brunelleschi, Sacrifice of Isaac
Feast of Harod, (presentation of head of the Baptist Donatello, Siena The artist achieved great fame in his own lifetime and was often called upon to work for other Italian cities. In 1427 he was commissioned to make a bronze relief for a font at Sienna. His subject was "The Feast of Herod" a scene from the life of St John the Baptist. Jules Hardouin-Mansart and Charles Le Brun. Hall of Mirrors, Palais de Versailles 1678 240 feet The underlying theme for the design and decoration of the palace was the glorification of the king as Apollo the sun god. Louis IV thought of the duties of kingship, including its pageantry, as a solemn performance, so it was appropriate that Rigaud’s portrait presented him on a raised, stage-like platform.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens. 1886 The tale of the statue is simple enough. Adams commissioned his friend Augustus Saint. Gaudens to create it in 1886, one year after his wife, Marian Adams, committed suicide. The larger structure later served as a tomb for both Marian and Henry Adams after the latter died in 1918, but the bronze figure became a tourist attraction even before Adams had seen it for himself.
