SCOTTISH HIGHLAND COOS
Scottish Highland Cattle (Scottish Highland Coos) are among the most beautiful looking of the cattle breeds. They are recognizable by their unique shaggy coats of wavy hair and striking horns. There are records dating back to the 17 thcentury. That makes them the oldest living breed of cattle in the world.
NATURAL HABITAT The natural habitat of Scottish Highland cattle is the rough hillside and natural wetland. The Highland cow prefers to live in woods and forests. Highlands are known as a hardy breed due to the rugged nature of their native Scottish Highlands, with high rainfall and very strong winds.
HIGHLAND CATTLE HAIR Highland coos have long, shaggy fur keeping them warm in cool weather The long fringe of hair known as the "dossan" protects the eyes against snow and driving rain, and helps prevent eye infections spread by insects. With such long coats and enormous, tapered horns these cattle have a magnificent, even fearsome, look about them. In fact, they are remarkably even tempered beasts.
HAIR USES The hair can be spun as readily as any other wool and the clothes made from cattle hair are very warm but somewhat itchy. Although it has a nice glance, the wool fiber feels smooth in the hands.
CARE FOR YOUNG Highland cows are noted for being highly devoted and protective mothers.
BREEDS Co The Society is very proud indeed to have created such a popular icon of the Highlander. The usual colours are black, brindled, red, yellow, and dun, and there is considerable difference of opinion among breeders as to which is preferable.
DOMESTICATED COOS Highland cattle is a popular cow kept at farms and parks. The reason for this is that they are low maintains and produce both milk, meat and great fur.
FOOD HABITS They can survive on poor grazing grounds. They eat plants which many other cattle avoid.
FESTIVALS AND EVENTS The Scottish coos take the annual Northeast Florida Scottish Games & Festival as everyone is wanting to pet them or cuddle them. These are a true reflection of the Scottish Character, rugged and tough!

REFLECTION When did the breed appear? Where the Scottish coos live? What is their hair like? What colour is hair of the Scottish Highland coos? Why do they need such thick hair? Do they eat the same food as ordinary cows?
