Rene Descartes Human Reasoning Cogito ergo sum I think, therefore, I am The phrase became a fundamental element of Western Philosophy as it was perceived to form a foundation for all knowledge. While other knowledge could be a figment of imagination, deception or mistake, the very act. . thinking…is proof of the reality of one's own existence, or at least that of one's thought.

Scientific Revolution Nicolaus Copernicus (1473– 1543) Monk, mathematician, and astronomer who proposed that the sun was stationary in the center of the universe and the earth revolved around it. Due to the failure of Ptolemy's Ptolemy model of the universe, Copernicus decided that he could achieve his goal only through a heliocentric model. However, mathematically, it did not work…. Copernicus came to be seen as The initiator of the Scientific Revolution.

Tycho Brahe (1546 -1601) Skane, Denmark (now, Sweden) • • • Built instruments and the observatory was visited by many scholars Tycho trained a generation of young astronomers Tycho hired Johannes Kepler as an assistant to calculate planetary orbits from his observations. • Tycho Brahe's contributions to astronomy – designed and built instruments – changed observational practice profoundly. Whereas earlier astronomers had been content to observe the positions of planets and the Moon at certain important points of their orbits (e. g. , opposition, quadrature, station), Tycho and his cast of assistants observed these bodies throughout their orbits. – As a result, a number of orbital anomalies never before noticed were made explicit by Tycho. Without these complete series of observations of unprecedented accuracy, Kepler could not have discovered that planets move in elliptical orbits.

Monseigneur Georges Lemaitre 17 July 1894 – 20 June 1966) Belgium Priest, astronomer and professor of physics at the Université catholique de Louvain The first to propose theory of the expansion of the Universe, widely misattributed to Edwin Hubble… two years before Hubble's article Lemaître proposed (what became known as) the Big Bang theorythe origin of the Universe, ‘primeval atom‘ or God’s Atom Honors class

My contention is that you know nothing… Until you research it, study it , understand it. How easily can one be manipulated if you only go by what you have been told? Assume nothing. Is the world really spherical or flat? Prove it… Is the sun really the center of our galaxy? Prove it… Social Studies Class or Science Class? : Where as it seemed we were debating an issue of science, what I was really doing was observing your reactions. How did you feel when you were confronted with ideas that went against everything you have ever been taught? Did you want to react as they did against Galileo? Were you angry? Try to put yourself in position of the people in the 1600’s when everything they believed was being challenged…The scientific revolution made sweeping changes in societies around th world.

Scientific Revolution Is the world flat…of course not. Is the earth the center of the Universe…of course not. But, don’t believe a word I say. Research. Find the answers for yourself.
