Scientific Revolution Remember: Revolution means Change!!!!
Main Idea l In the 1500 s, scientists began to question accepted beliefs. l They began to use experimentation.
So What? l This process led to the development of the scientific method, which is still used today. l Make observations. l State the problem. l Hypothesize. l Perform an experiment. l Record results. l Form a conclusion. l Report your results.
Roots of Modern Science l Scholars during the Middle Ages had a geocentric view of the universe. (They think the earth is in the center. ) l Exploration and new discoveries challenge old ways of thinking about the world and lead to the Scientific Revolution.
A New Model of the Universe l Scientists develop heliocentric theory (suncentered) through observation and mathematics. l Nicolas Copernicus suggested this theory. He said most planets revolved around the sun. Most scholars rejected this theory.
l Galileo’s observations and his laws of motion support the heliocentric theory. He observed the skies with a telescope that he constructed. l Who do you think is going to be mad about his ideas? ? ? l Galileo’s ideas conflict with the Church, and he gets arrested. He was forced to take back his ideas.
The Scientific Method l The scientific method is a logical procedure for gathering and testing ideas. l Frances Bacon urges scientists to draw conclusions about the world based on their own observations. l Rene Descartes believes that everything should be doubted until it can be proved by reason.
Newton Explains the Law of Gravity l Newton’s Laws of Gravity explain how the same physical laws govern motion on earth and in the heavens. He built on the knowledge of Copernicus and Galileo. He used math to prove the existence of force. l This force is called gravity!
