Scientific Notation

Big When numbers get really ______ or really ______ small it is inconvenient to write out all of the zeros. For this reason we use Scientific Notation.

POSITIVE EXPONENT a) 5600 =5. 6 x 103 103 because there are 3 places to the right of the decimal. NEGATIVE EXPONENT b) 0. 00042 = 4. 2 /10000 = 4. 2 x 10 -4 because there are 4 places to the left of the decimal.

Steps for scientific notation • Locate a number between 1 and 9 • Put a decimal where appropriate to make that number • Count the number of spaces to the end of the number • Always write x 10 and the exponent which is the number of spaces • Neg. exponent = smaller # and to the left • Pos. exponent = bigger # and to the right

Examples • 600 = • 4 678 000 = 0. 007 = 0. 000 152 = Solutions 600 = 6. 0 x 102 0. 007 = 7. 0 x 10 -3 4 678 000 = 4. 7 x 106 0. 000 152 = 1. 5 x 10 -4
