Scientific Method defn. Scientific Method: a logical approach to solving problems by observing and collecting data, formulating a hypotheses, testing a hypotheses, and formulating theories that are supported by data.
Stages in the Scientific Method 1. Observing defn. the use of the senses to obtain in formation. This usually involves making measurements and collecting data. Data can be described as: a. Quantitative: this type of data can be described as numerical. Example would be mass and volume b. Qualitative: this type of data is non-numerical. Examples would be the fact that the sky is blue.
2. Formulating Hypotheses defn. Generalizations about the data to formulate a hypothesis or testable statement. Usually has an “if-then” statement Example: If you light dry wood then it will burn. A hypotheses is usually predicting what you think will happen. When formulating a hypothesis you must generate a testable statement.
3. Testing Hypotheses This requires experimentation that provides data to support or refute a hypothesis or theory When testing a hypothesis you must have 2 things 1. A control: this is a condition in the experiment that remains constant. 2. A variable: this is a condition that changes in the experiment.
4. Theorizing defn. Theory: Abroad generalization that explains a body of fact or phenomena. A theory is not a scientific LAW. defn. Model: An explanation how phenomena occur and how data or events are related an example would be the atomic model If you test a hypothesis and it fails your test than you must reformulate your original hypothesis.
