Metric System • Common form of measuring matter – Why would having one common form of measurement be a benefit? Base Units: Mass = gram (g) volume = liter (L) Length = meter (m)
How are we able to designate the number? By using prefixes! What are the prefixes we will most often use? Kilo, Hecto, Deca, Deci, Centi, Milli
How to convert • When converting between prefixes in the metric system, you can use either dimensional analysis or the “King Henry” method.

Scientific Notation • Same number, different way of writing it. • Puts large numbers or really small numbers into a more manageable form • Rules: 1. Move the decimal to a number between 1 and 10 2. Write that number and “X 10” 3. The exponent is the number of times you moved the decimal
Scientific Notation • Examples: – Convert 364520000 to scientific notation – Convert 0. 0000000354 to scientific notation
Density • The relationship between mass and volume – Mass = the amount of matter in a substance – Volume = the amount of space something takes up Density = mass/volume The density of water is 1 g/m. L. If the density of an object is greater than 1, will it sink or float? Why?
Question: • You have a mixture of two metals in large quantities. Neither will dissolve in water but one metal floats and the other metal sinks. How can we easily separate the two?
